On arrival at Yodo Island, Wonsan Harbor, Burned to a crisp. The helo crewman cut my gloves off and put ointment on my hands. The helo pilot was (CAP) A. T. West, USN; he and I were in flight training together. He was lost two days before I got to Yokosuka, Japan to thank him and his crewman for picking me up.

I was taken to a small landing craft from Yodo Island out to a DE. She left Wonsan Harbor immediately and the next day I was transferred by highline, strapped prone in a stretcher, to the USS Helena (CA-75). One of the hairiest parts of the whole experience. I asked thecrew of the DE "What if the lines parted?" They said not to worry, there are empty ammo cans on both sides of the stretcher, and it would float. I asked again, "What if I landed face down?" About that time. off I went with no answer. The trip took a little over a minute, but at the time it seemed like a week!! Two of the cruiser's doctors and a corpsman took very good care of me until i could be sent back to the Essex when we met the task force five days later.
