The Olympic sized swimming pool contained more
than just water and was used for more than recreation. Survival training
was one of the key purposes of the facility. Shown here is the Dilbert
Dunker in action. An airplane cockpit on rails that crashed to the bottom
of the pool and turned upside down taught aviators how to escape from aircraft
when submerged. The first photo shows an aviator entering the cockpit for
the ride to the bottom. The second shows the cockpit fully elevated on
the rails which will carry it and the occupant to the bottom of the pool
and then invert. The third photo shows the cockpit careening down the rails
just before submersion.
