This picture of the weather-vane was taken in October 1997 by Tim Tyler of Detroit.
The distant object in the photo is normally referred to by aviators
as the Tetrahedron. Its principal purpose is to provide pilots with a visual
indication of wind direction. It is lighted for night operation. It is
especially important in the event of lost communications with the tower
as the pilot can visibly determine wind direction and there for identify
the proper runway for landing. During night operation the runway lighting
will also identify the active strip with the Tetrehedron providing the
appropriate direction. Most of the actual weather sensing equipment was
located in , on, or adjacent to Hanger #1. -- Hal Neubauer
